About the town

Founded in the 6th C BC, this originally Phocean town is today a typical small, stone-built fishing village lying between the Mediterranean and Thau Lake.

By the beginning of the 20th C it had become a dynamyc commercial port, but today it is only a charming holiday port of call for pleasure craft and canal boats.

Wander through the streets, explore the covered square, see the oldest stone statue of marianne symbolising the French Republic, the Bird Museum-Hall with its unique, highly colourful collection of several hundred stuffed birds from all over the world.

The Canal du Midi enters the Thau Lake at the tip of des Onglous in Marseillan. The Lagoon is a refuge for innumerable birds.
